about

sound installation as part of collaborative exhibition with Alina Senchenko, Behind the Curtain, held at Dynamo Arts Association, May 2017

The soundscape installation reflects an archive of daily life, containing audio clips of radio and television punctuated by speeches by Soviet politicians, Ukrainian poems of 1960’s resistance, advertisements, and music, mixed with recordings of cooking, washing dishes, and cutting vegetables. The soundscape is designed as a fictional eavesdrop on the dreamspace of a woman who has lived through the many transitions of the Eastern Bloc, from post-war to the revolution, the occupation, and the fall of the Iron Curtain, who has found consistency in the mundane, as she spends an hour in her home while her distorted memories, the unspoken, and the imprints of time on her psyche resurface.

This way, it will be better for us

Do you understand it?
No one understands anything.
No one understands us.

21 of August 1968, the people of Prague woke up with a completely different reality.
The Czechoslovakian Nation needs support to sustain its strategic technologies that are threatened. They are still strengthening attacks from both sides, internal and foreign reaction.

Oh love of mine
My sweet tender love, I promise
until happiness turns her back on us, I still have love

This is Radio Prague, Czechoslovakia, the legitimate voice of occupied Czechoslovakia. We broadcast of frequencies 48 to 51 nichiban in English, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Russian, and Czech. Please tell all your friends and friendly radio stations, this is Radio Prague, Czechoslovakia. And now we continue. Prague has risen up into a fifth day under firing of occupation. The night was one of terror. Occupation took fire at cars, motorcycles, every moving object, without warning.

Everything is getting ruined in our world

This way, it will be better for us

Nobody yet knows how many were killed and wounded because the occupation forces stopped ambulances from reaching their places.

Jan, why did you do this to yourself?
I wanted to express disapproval and to awaken the people.
You wanted to awaken the people, and express your disapproval of what's going on?
Yes.
And how in particular?
By self-immolation.
Self immolation?

I understand why these tendencies are created in bourgeois society where the classes are collapsing. I understand that that society has these tendencies. But that our world class artists and agents of culture adopted these destructive and perverted thoughts and ways that were created in different environments and transplanted them into our climate. And to poison our working class with this is perverted. For years it was tolerated and also we were playing poker with them, and these big writers were stealing lyrics and that became the norm.

My brother Jan,
Always watching a stork in a crowd of crows.
And liked to laugh as a peasant,
My brother Jan.
He loved the world

And he had so little, little years,
When he dared enter the gates,
From which it is not possible to return

Hey Jude, What is making you cry
eyes burning and tears falling
you don’t have more, only one last small present
you know a few songs and ill go with you

Hey Jude, I like you
that’s the song that I am singing
in every song that ends a dream
there apparently is who
the song ends with

What are you doing?
Am I like a doll, this way?
I am a doll.
Uh huh.

This way, it will be better for us

Year after year your prison is growing
Year after year the wall sinks into the ground,
and your complains are hardened,
behind the misery – there is no light
You live - and Wait. Born - and Wait.
Wait - before the end of life. Wait - in a coffin.
Do not let us consider – years run out
without spot of heaven and a glass of water.
You all - in islands of solitude,
tides of depression, like a snail,
from fiery anger broke out,
you fear to comprehend the limits of pain
A whole world silent, bleak, burned out,
not to fulfill old thirst.
He took all your courage,
left to their fate and cursed

Oh love of mine
My sweet tender love, I promise
until happiness turns her back on us, I still have love

From Communist leader Gustáv Husák, shortly after the Prague Spring
From Vera Chytilova’s 1967 film Daisies, which was banned by the government. After Daisies, the gov’t made it impossible for Chytilova to work so she made commercials under her husband’s name Jaroslav Kučera
From Daisies
Nurse speaking with Jan Palach after his self-immolation and shortly before he died.
Speech by Husák regarding closing the border to culture and information from the west
English translation of Czech translation of Hey Jude. Many songs from the west were illegally translated into Czech and played on acoustic guitar
From Daisies
